Structures Field Review Site 06 2014Buncombe, Bridge on I-26 over Pond Rd and Hominy Creek

Issues:

Replacement of existing dual bridges with wide single structure; staged construction (3 stages); expansion joints seals at end bents; contractor had issues installing the joints between construction stages due to the location of the temporary concrete barriers and phasing of traffic

Action Item:

Clarify the break location of expansion joint seals when staged construction is required; require splice locations of joint seal base angles to be shown on the working drawings

Issues:

Slope protection issues at End Bent 2; the ditch, from edge of shoulder of road under to toe of slope, varied in width, slope was steeper at end of end bent cap to toe versus at the staged construction joint of end bent cap

Action Items:

· For the slope protection, it is possible that the design firm (URS) may have set the bridge length using the ditch elevation along the centerline of survey instead of using the controlling corner on each side of the bridge

· Investigate the use of optional precast blocks used for slope protection

Issues:

Anticipate difficulty gaining access to pour the continuous bent diaphragms due to construction staging

Action Item:

Locating the construction joint at the centerline of the girder versus an overhang (of a foot or more) in the closure pour bay should allow more access for construction of the continuous bent diaphragms

Issues:

Some of the CFL tubes were exposed during low temperatures, which caused cracking in the drilled shafts; the cracked pier sections had to be removed and replaced with new columns

Action Item:

Address in the Standard Specifications (Section 420); prevent accumulation of moisture and water in drilled piers if exposed
